Understanding Secularism

Class 8th Civics

  • Discrimination, exclusion and persecution on the grounds of religion
In history there has been many examples of discrimination based on religion .Jews 's persecution in Germany, millions were killed .The Jewish State of Israel treats its own Muslim and Christian minorities quite badly. In Saudi Arabia, non-Muslims are not allowed to build a temple, church etc., and nor can they gather in a public place for prayers.

  • What is Secularism?

A principle or strategy of separating the power of religion and the power of the State. Secularism refers to this as separation of religion from the State.

  • Importance of Separating Religion from the State
  1.   To prevent   the tyranny of the majority and the violation of Fundamental Rights of people.
  2. To protect the freedom of individuals to exit from their religion ,embrace other religion and freedom to freedom their religious teachings in  their own way.

  • Concept of Indian secularism and its objectives:
 1. No domination of  one religious community  on another
 2. No domination in  same religious community
 3. t State does not enforce any particular religion nor take away the religious freedom of individuals.

  •   Various ways adopted  in India to prevent religious domination
  1. Strategy of distancing itself from religion- for eg; The Indian State is not ruled by a religious group  and government spaces like law courts, police stations, government schools and offices are not supposed to  promote any one religion.
  2. Strategy of non interference-for eg; wearing helmet by Sikhs is not enforced as they wear pugri
  3. strategy of intervention-for eg; to prevent domination, untouchability was abolished. financial aid on non- preferential basis.

  • Difference between Indian and American secularism
In the U.S.A. the separation between State and religion means that neither the State nor religion can interfere in the affairs of one another.  there is  the strict separation between religion and the State in American secularism, in Indian secularism the State can intervene in religious affairs.
